As we reflect on the recent dignified transfers in Delaware, let us remember that behind each soldier serving overseas are loved ones anxiously waiting for their safe return. Military service profoundly impacts families, bringing both uncertainty and sacrifice. Many hold these service members in their thoughts and prayers, honoring their courage and dedication.

Recently, I had the honor of delivering the keynote address at the Pearl Harbor Ceremony. Although I felt proud to be invited, I was also hesitant, questioning my ability to speak on military sacrifices without personal experience. After much prayer, I was inspired to express my gratitude to all the military personnel present and to invite their families to stand in recognition. Much like the Motel 6 slogan, “We keep the light on,” families provide a crucial light of hope.

My wife, Patty, and I understand this personally, as our son-in-law is in the Army and was deployed to Poland during the Russian invasion of Ukraine and now Epic Fury. Families need to send the message, “We’re here; everything is good,” to help boost their soldiers’ morale.

I am proud of my son-in-law, who courageously fights for freedom for others. While we worry about his safety, we are incredibly proud of his service. I encourage everyone to pray for all troops, especially for Gold Star families who make immense sacrifices. Their love and support for service members are truly commendable.

On Pearl Harbor Day, even though the term "Gold Star Families" did not exist, over 2,000 families were tragically formed that fateful day. Those of us at home, concerned for our soldiers on the battlefield, take immense pride in knowing our loved ones are heroes.

Please join me in honoring those who bravely serve both at home and abroad. If you can, please take a moment to pray for those in harm's way and for their loved ones awaiting their safe return.
